New to Scuba? 8 Things to Know Before Your First Dive in Roatán
If you’ve never strapped on a tank before, the idea of breathing underwater can feel bigger than it needs to be. Here’s what first-timers actually need to know before diving with us in Roatán.
You don’t need to be certified to try it
Our Discover Scuba program is built for complete beginners. You’ll start with your instructor with some theory and understanding a little more about diving. Followed by a shallow water practice session, and then the exciting moment to head to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. All while being with your instructor throughout to explore the marine life and underwater world.— no certification card required, no prior experience needed. Just half a day of your time and a sense of adventure.
The water is warm all year
Roatán’s water stays warm year-round — generally 78–86°F (26–30°C), cooling slightly in the October–December low season. Either way, you’re comfortable in just a light wetsuit or even a swimsuit. No cold-water gear, no drysuit training.
Visibility is consistently good
It’s common to see 60–100 feet of visibility, sometimes more in calm summer conditions. For a first dive, that means the reef feels close and vivid rather than murky and intimidating.
You’ll dive in a small group
We keep groups small, so your instructor can actually watch you, not just count heads. That’s the same approach we use with every diver, certified or not — it’s how we keep things safe and comfortable.
Breathing underwater feels stranger than it is
The only real skill on day one is remembering to breathe slowly and normally — never hold your breath. Everything else (buoyancy, finning, equalizing your ears) your instructor walks you through this before you descend below the surface.
Equalizing your ears just takes practice
As you descend, you’ll gently pinch your nose and blow to equalize pressure in your ears — the same trick as on an airplane. Your instructor will have you practice this slowly on the way down.
