Marine life

What marine life can I see while diving?

Roatán is famous for the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second largest in the world — with a diverse array of marine life that makes it a haven for underwater enthusiasts. Encounters vary by dive site, depth and season, so here’s what to look for.

Coral Reefs

Extensive hard and soft coral reefs create a kaleidoscope of colour across every Roatán dive site.

Reef Fish

An incredible variety of reef-dwelling species, including angelfish, parrotfish, surgeonfish and damselfish.

Barracudas

Sleek predators that hover near the drop-offs and walls, known for their distinctive silhouette.

Sea Turtles

Green and hawksbill turtles are frequently spotted gliding through the water or resting on the reef.

Moray Eels

Elusive creatures often seen peering out from crevices in the reef, jaws and all.

Lionfish

An invasive species, but strikingly beautiful and prevalent across Roatán’s reefs.

Nurse Sharks

Docile sharks often found resting in sandy areas near the reef — generally harmless to divers.

Spotted Eagle Rays

Octopuses
